Department of Social and Political Sciences (SPS)
The Department of Social and Political Sciences (SPS) of the University of Milan has been ranked first among the large social sciences departments in the 2004-2010 research assessment and it was awarded as a Department of Excellence in 2018 and 2023.
SPS conducts and coordinates research and teaching programs in the fields of social and political theory, public policy analysis, the politics of work and welfare, and the study of culture and social relations. SPS is involved in several projects concerning the transformation of welfare state models and reconciling economic and social Europe, paying attention to new social risks and needs, among which work-life balance, collective bargaining, and representativeness of welfare beneficiaries, employers and workers in company-based welfare plans in response to changes in the European labour market.
A strong focus is also on Industrial Relations at the national and European levels. Studies have been strongly related to the advancement of Social Dialogue. Global trends in social inequalities in Europe from a comparative perspective and the exploration of innovative ways to reduce inequality and poverty risks are at the core of many research activities.
